Interview with Carlo Spadoni

Carlo Spadoni is the author of AROS One x86 and
AROS One 68k,
two software distributions for the AROS operating system. Here's an interview with this passionate Italian,
known as "AMIGASYSTEM" on the forums, to find out a little more about him and his distributions.
 Hello Carlo. Can
you introduce yourself?
I am an old man of 70 years old, born in Brindisi (Italy, Apulia region), I have been for 40 years a
firefighter (expert department chief). In my administrations, I was also in charge of informatics.
I have many hobbies, besides computing I love fishing, I practised amateur league soccer, I collect coins,
stamps and passionate about the ancient history of my city.
What was your
first computer?
My first computer was the C16 (Commodore 16).
When and how
did you discover the Amiga?
It was in 1991, by chance I bought my son the Amiga 500 Plus for his birthday !
Which Amiga
models have you owned over the years? What is your current configuration?
I own (but have not used) Amiga 500 Plus, A600HD, A1200HD/030, A4000/060, CD32+SX32 for 30 years.
At the moment, I prefer to use WinUAE where I can choose and run all Amiga models with one click.
What are
your favourite activities on the Amiga?
Configuring the Workbench and various software to make them more functional, as well as make them
more aesthetically pleasing and modern.
Before offering
your AROS One distributions, what did you do in terms of development and creation on the Amiga?
I am not a developer, although I do dabble in creating scripts and creating themes and icons for Wanderer.
Before AROS One x86, I had started with AROS One 68k.
For Amiga, I had created AfA One, based on AmigaOS 3.9 BB4, plus AfA OS extension.
You are the
creator AROS One x86 and 68k. For those who do not know them yet, can you introduce those AROS distributions?
I am the creator of AROS One, an operating system strongly inspired by AmigaOS, specifically my old AfA One
distribution, a kind of modern Amiga with eye-catching graphics and beautiful custom icons created by me.
On AROS, I started out using Icaros Desktop and AspireOS. Then, because I was not satisfied, I wanted to
create my own distribution and AROS One was born.
Does AROS One x86
work on all PCs? Which machine do you recommend?
Actually, it could work on all PCs, but these PCs should have compatible hardware. In
this link is listed
all the supported hardware!
To a new user, I recommend using a virtual machine as the first time, best choice is VMware (easy to install),
but AROS One x86 also works well on VirtualBox and QEMU.
To experienced users, on the other hand, I recommend using a PC, and to more experienced users, a dual boot with other OS.
Do you work
alone on your AROS distributions? If not, who's helping you? And do you need more contributors?
On AROS One, I work on it alone, but any collaboration is welcome.
For you, what
are the strengths and weaknesses of AROS One x86 compared to others AROS x86 distributions like Icaros Desktop
or Tiny AROS?
AROS One, at the moment, is the most up-to-date AROS distribution, it includes themes and hundreds of dual PNG icons
created especially by me for AROS One.
Strength or Weakness is not for me to say, it' a subjective thing. AROS Users, like Amiga users, have different
tastes, there are those who like a modern, beautiful and efficient Workbench, there are those who do not like
progress and prefer a "bare" Workbench with old 4 colour icons.
In AROS One x86,
did you plan to add features present in Icaros Desktop like FastConfig, AmiBridge or Live Update?
Doing the FastConfig is very complicated since there are not many PCs that have the supported hardware. In
some cases, the same model PC has a different video card or network card.
AROS is a self-configuring system if the hardware is supported, configuring it is very simple.
I don't like AmiBridge, if I have to emulate Amiga, I prefer the best i.e. WinUAE, or AROS 68k. In any
case, on AROS One x86 there are fully functional JanusUAE and E-UAE available.
Did AROS One x86
include exclusive software or just software from AROS-Archives/Aminet? Do you plan to include commercial
applications in AROS One x86 for increase its interest?
All AROS software is available from all platforms, there are no exclusive software. I do not like commercial
software, AROS One is a free system and I would prefer free software, but if commercial software would increase
interest, then it is welcome.
What's the
latest version of AROS One 68k, and where can we download it?
AROS One is available at sites.google.com/view/arosone.
Only the latest version is available.
Older versions are not officially available but can be requested, I avoid posting old versions to avoid
confusion as they include core and software no longer supported.
What are the
minimum system requirements for AROS One 68k?
It would actually work but slowly even on Amiga expanded models. My advice is to use WinUAE or a newer
generation Amiga card.
What were the
greatest difficulties in designing your AROS distributions? (searching programs, ask developers for permission, testing, messages on the forums...)
Yes, everything you mentioned is indispensable. It often happens that I ask a developer to compile a program
for AROS and then do the beta testing.
Difficulties can arise on some problems reported on the forums, where the problem encountered is not always
fixable because it was not caused by my distribution but by a bug in the software itself.
What are your
projects for the future of AROS One x86 and 68k?
Given my age, I hope to improve it as much as possible as long as possible.
Do you know
how many people download and use your AROS distributions?
There are many people who "download" it, but not many who frequent the various forums, so it is very
difficult to know how many actually use it.
What is your
opinion about the relaunch of AmigaOS 68k development? And about AmigaOS 3.2+?
AmigaOS 3.2 was a nice innovation. But in my opinion, in the same time, it stopped the progress of AmigaOS 3.9,
this is one of the reasons why AfA One was no longer produced.
What is your
opinion about ApolloOS, the official operating for Apollo/Vampire cards based on AROS 68k?
ApolloOS and a "mixed" system that includes AmigaOS software. In my opinion, it still needs time for it to
reach full compatibility with AmigaOS software.
Do you think
AROS 68k will improve with the contributions of the Apollo team?
The more people working on it the better!
What are your
contributions to TAWS, Michael Rupp's online Workbench simulation. Do you think we'll ever have a complete
and/or usable online Amiga simulation?
For online Amiga simulation, you should ask Michael Rupp. On TAWS, you can find both AROS One 68k and my AfA One,
although these are very old versions that I sent to Michael Rupp a long time ago.
Back to AROS x86.
What software or functions are currently missing the most from AROS x86?
The software that is lacking is what users would like to find, an efficient browser that would allow them
to go to all sites and an office package.
Regarding functions, I would like to see Wanderer enhanced to be similar to Workbench 3.9 (now based on
Workbench 3.1).
What is your
opinion about AROS specific machines like (old now) iMica One and AresOne?
I don't know, I've never used these machines.
Apart from the
AROS One distributions, do you have any other Amiga/AROS projects?
The next project will be AROS One 64-bit. This will happen when an internal emulator is available that
will allow 32-bit software to run directly (work in progress).
What is your
opinion about others Amiga NG operating systems like MorphOS and AmigaOS 4?
MorphOS and AmigaOS 4 are more advanced operating systems than AROS (they have more developers than AROS).
Is there a
question I didn't ask you, and that you want to answer to?
Yes. Maybe you should have asked me when Amiga will end to exist and to be used. I would have answered you
when all Amigans become too old! Many young people do not know Amiga.
A last message
for the Amiga community?
Keep Amiga in the heart and try to spread it to posterity so that it does not disappear from the computer stage.
